چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: With the extensive application of radiation sources and radioactive materials in various fields, the study of attenuation and absorption of X-rays and gamma-rays in several materials has become an essential and interesting field of research. Glass materials are possible alternatives of concretes for radiation-shielding materials.   Materials and Methods: The mass attenuation coefficients (µm), effective atomic cross section (σa), effective atomic number (Zeff) and effective electron density (Neff) of silicate glasses containing different concentrations of Bi2O3, PbO, and BaO (30–70% by weight) were obtained using MCNP-4C code, XCOM and XMuDat programs, in the energy range of 10 keV–10 MeV. The interpolation method was employed to extract Zeff and Neff. The Auto-Zeff software was used to determine the Zeff as well.   Results: The MCNP-4C Code, XCOM and XMuDat programs and Auto-Zeff results were in good agreement. It was found that the µm and σa values decrease with photon energy. Also the results indicate that σa and Zeff of glasses improve by increasing their Bi2O3, PbO and BaO contents, while increasing these contents to the same fraction has no significant effect on µm in the energy range of 0.3–5 MeV, where the Compton Effect takes over as dominant process and Neff do not follow certain rule. Above 0.1 MeV, lead oxide silicate glass showed the highest values of Zeff and σa. Conclusion: Observed good agreement indicates that the chosen Monte Carlo code and computer programs may be useful to calculate the gamma-ray shielding characteristics of different glass systems, particularly in cases where no experimental data exist.

Optical properties of Nd doped Bi2O3-PbO-Ga2O3 glasses.

The optical properties of a new family of neodymium doped BPG (Bi2O3-PbO-Ga2O3 ) glasses are presented. We measured a high refractive index, of 2.5, and a transmission cutoff in the far infrared at 8microm. Three intense emission bands are observed centered at 877nm, 1066nm and 1341nm. The emission cross-section is 10 -20 cm 2 and the total spectral linewidth is 30nm at 1066nm. The Judd-Ofelt p...

X - Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Silicate Glasses

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a powerful technique capable of providing unique information about the structural chemistry of glasses. However, inappropriate procedures for the preparation of sample surfaces or the lack of reliable methods to overcome electrostatic charging effects during analysis of dielectric materials can cause spurious features to be introduced or intrinsic featu...

The Relationship between Structural and Optical Properties of GeO2-PbO Glasses

The structural and optical characterization of bulk GeO2-PbO glasses was the goal of this study. In this regard, six different (100-x)GeO2‌-xPbO (15<x<45) glasses were prepared by conventional melt quenching technique between two steel sheets. The produced samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis s...

X-Ray Absorption Study of Ti-bearing Silicate Glasses

Ti K-edge XANES spectra have been collected on a series of Ti-bearing silicate glasses with metasilicate and tetrasilicate compositions. The intensity of the preedge feature in these spectra has been found to change with glass composition and varies from 29 to 58% (normalized intensity) suggesting a variation in structural environent around the absorbing atom. The pre-edge peak intensity increa...

“Study of stable gallium oxide heavey metal Ga2O3-Bi2O3-PbO system glasses proposed as a base for optically noble glazes and enamels”

Ultra optical glasses are proposed for attaining noble glazes of high reflection and shine. In addition, these glasses can be used as semi-mirrors and optical instruments. In this reseach attempts were devoted mainly to introduce a glass system with the highest possible refractive index in which the highest reflection is desirable. Thus different amounts of heavy metal oxides modifiers, such as...
